2010 will surely be an awesome year. It seems to be the year in which we are going to see lot of giant releases from giant organizations. Starting from operating systems like Windows 7 to the real time strategy games like StarCraft II . Therefore next year will bring lot of cool products in the marketplace. Lets see few promising and eagerly awaited releases dated in 2010.

Starting from the big news obviously. Two big releases expected are Windows 7 and later in 2010 , Google chrome OS.

Windows 7 :

Bill Gates earlier said that the next operating system of the company will be shipped as soon as 2009 and the current release dates of windows 7 seem to justify the owner’s statement. The current release date is october 22 2009.

Windows 7 is almost out of development stages (codename BlackComb). It is expected by the customers that windows 7 will provide lighter and slimmer profile as compared to Vista.

All in all, Windows 7 is shaping up well. It’s a far more modest release than Vista was, but it’s no worse for that. The new OS introduces a compelling combination of welcome innovations and much-needed polish, and that’s exactly what Microsoft needs right now. Vista’s foundation was solid, and Windows 7 just makes it better.

said Peter Bright, ArsTechnica

Windows 7 free trial is now available for tech pros at no charge and is limited for 90 days of usage. You can download the free trial of enterprise edition from here as soon as it is available.

Download from Here

Google Chrome OS:

This july google officially announced that they are working on a project named Google chrome OS. Though it is intended to be installed on netbooks but still people are waiting to see when google will open source the code and release it for use.

The main features of Google Chrome OS are speed, security and simplicity and the fact that it will be very lightweight makes me more curious about it. The user interface is minimal and most of the user experience takes place on the web. And according to the Google guys, as they did for the Google Chrome browser, they are going back to the basics and completely redesigning the underlying security architecture of the OS so that users don’t have to deal with viruses, malware and security updates.

Here is a nice little video preview of the google chrome OS framework.

Apple Multi-Touch Tablet:

The good news for all the fans of Apple inc is Apple tablet Pc that is going to be released in 2010 and Steve Jobs is quite satisfied with the device. This is a 10 inch , 3G enabled tablet. This device will be probably price between iPhone and an affordable mac notebook of apple and it will come with the OS version similar to current Mac OS X .

Nokia Maemo Based Tablet and N900 Phone:

The top leading mobile phone company has not given up its fate infront of giants like apple and google but it is working on its own platform called Maemo 5. It prepares for its annual conference and spotlight is on N900 Phone which is Maemo 5 based.

Main features of the phone are its large screen, QWERTY slide out keyboard and proportions bigger than a smartphone. These N series of Nokia will have mobile version of the linux called Maemo.

Further Reading from Here.

Intel’s Moorestown and New Moblin Linux:

Earlier this year intel gave details about the future launch of its Moorestown chip platform and told the release date as in mid 2010. This launch will also provide new version of moblin which is a linux based OS of intel specially designed for small devices. Interestingly it is 3G technology based and it consumes 10 times less power when idle as compared to other current devices running intel atom. this release might also provide capabilities of HSPA and WiMax technology.

Microsoft Office 2010(codenamed Office 14):

Microsoft office 2010 will be a big release because of its revolutionary features and online support. Office 2010 Web apps will be competing against google Docs which is the current leader in the online version of documentation. It will be interesting to see what features does Web apps provide ( See this article Office Vs Google Docs) . We are sure that the desktop version of the Office will be better and more rich.

Office 2010 will be as to Office 2007 as Windows 7 is to Windows Vista in my point of view.

Further Reading from Here.

Intel Xeon Nehalem-EX Processor:

Tag line: She is back and She’s bringing a few of her friends.

Now lets turn towards the world of video gaming because i know the list is not complete without the inclusion of gaming industry news.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Nintendo Wii) :

Super mario galaxy 2 is upcoming video game in development stages for Nintendo Wii console. It is the next version of super mario galaxy. Its game play is similar to that of the previous version but the focus is on 3D planets of different sizes and landscapes. Bee suit power up will be available. Mario will be riding a bipedal dinosaur named Yoshi and there will be lot of fun playing such a nice and legandary game.

Grand Theft Auto (The ballad of Gay Tony) rumored(PS3):

Gamespy is claiming that Rockstar has confirmed that a new game of GTA series is under development stages. We all have played GTA vice city and San Andries which were quite good. So Rockstar knows that their most paying game is GTA and not any other game. It is expected that the game will be ready in the next year october or so.

StarCraft II:

Star Craft is no doubt one of the best games , so it is not a surprise that the real time strategy fans were not happy when Star Craft II was announced. Blizzard has improved the graphics and increased the units but left the huge all out battles unchanged . T0o often game developers try to rebuild video games but why do they rebuild perfection?

The Google-Microsoft rivalry continues and this time Google has finally decided to challenge the monoply of Microsoft in the stream of Operating Systems. For the last decade or so, Microsoft has undoubtedly ruled the world of operating systems. Nine months after the successful release of Google Chrome web browser, Google officially announced a couple of days ago that it will be working on a new project – The Google Chrome Operating System and according to them its a natural extension of Google Chrome.

Like Google chrome, the Google Chrome OS is an open source software and it is initially targeted at netbooks. “Later this year we will open-source its code, and netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010. Because we’re already talking to partners about the project, and we’ll soon be working with the open source community, we wanted to share our vision now so everyone understands what we are trying to achieve“, says Google.

The main focus of Google seems to be the Web. “For application developers, the Web is the platform,” Sundar Pichai, vice president of product management, and Linus Upson, engineering director, said in the Google Chrome OS blog announcement Tuesday. That gives Google some real advantages. Everybody already is using the Web, including everybody using Windows. Adding Web applications to your life is a much more gradual shift than suddenly cutting over from Windows to Linux or Mac OS X. Aside from Google’s own Web applications, such as Google Docs and Gmail, there are online photo editors, personal finance tools, and games.

There have been instances in the past where operating systems have been developed but the Google Chrome OS has got an advantage over its other rivals such as Linux lacked : the Web. Chrome OS faces the same applications challenge as any other operating system, but it’s rising to that challenge in a different way. It includes the Chrome browser running on a stripped-down version of Linux, but the applications won’t run on Linux, they’ll run on the Internet.

Google is certainly progressing by leaps and bounds. Nine months ago when they released the chrome browser, most of the people would say that it would never be able to challenge firefox and might not be able to make people shift from firefox to chrome but they did that. Yes they did. Today more than 30 million people are using Google Chrome regularly and thats really a huge achievement considering the fact that its only been around for nine months. And they certainly have got a lot more to offer. I just can’t wait for Google Chrome OS to be released. Its not going to be an easy task by any means but i believe they can do it.

Orca assistive technologies for sight-impaired users. Orca combines speech synthesis, braille and magnification for a highly functional interface to many of the applications and toolkits that Ubuntu distributes including Firefox, OpenOffice, Acroread, Transmission and many more. Orca defines a set of default behaviours (reactions to application events) and key bindings (reactions to user key presses).

Slow keys and gesture support. Ubuntu offers multiple variants of slow-key support, which is an essential tool for the physically impaired – enabling the keyboard to be used as a mouse for instance. Ubuntu also supports an on-screen, touch-screen keyboard, which can be used with pointers. It also offers gesture support.

Summary:

Most of the claims of jaunty jakalope are coming true. No doubt its faster than any distribution with boot time as good as 21 seconds. Its more and more stable than any other Ubuntu version. Its experience is nice with clean and beautiful desktop. It has auto update manager that automatically updates your libraries and packages. All in all this release has really impressed me a lot.

I could go on and on giving you list of features and telling you which libraries are installed and which kernel Ubuntu is using. But for this version of Ubuntu all these tech bits take a back seat and tell a fact that we are experiencing one of the first Linux distribution that could compete with the windows.

Nokia has been building Maemo 5, companies first SDK for mobile application development ,for quite long. Now its new version named Harmattan is in development stages. Nokia is planning to remove its Symbian based S60 platform and adopt its Maemo mobile platform as early as end of 2010.

All such claims are quite speculative and Nokia has not confirmed yet.but some series of signs show that it is true.Nokia recently did a complete linux based telephony stack project in collaboration with Intel. May be to bring voice to the Maemo SDK framework.
So if its true then Maemo could make a very good mobile development platform due to strong roots of linux and its desktop technologies. People consider, it might be more effective option than android for developers and hardware manufacturers who don’t like androids insular ecosystem. and also Maemo might be having the ability to transport existing desktop GTK+ and QT applications to smartphones.

“Maemo desktop image”

Features of Maemo 5 Alpha SDK :

Maemo 5 beta SDK includes new UI framework and API for rapid mobile application development. Its UI brings simple and attractive feeling with finger based full screen context. It supports hardware accelerated 3D graphics at WVGA resolution.

The Maemo 5 beta SDK comes with new APIs:

Location API: methods to build location-aware applications.

City Information: methods to obtain information about cities, including city name, country name, and country code.

Time management: an interface for handling time change notifications and collect relevant time and time zone information.

Vibra service: methods for triggering and controlling vibrations.

Device orientation: respond to changes in orientation and discover current orientation.

some other improved APIs are Address book Access, Alarm, Data notifications, Battery, Account and Logging development interfaces.

There are situations when users have to access certain applications of operating systems other than their native operating sytems. Certain organizations take migration steps towards opensource platforms. They need to provide their users with access to critical legacy applications. In other cases, when you have upgraded your computer system with latest hardware and your old native OS doesn’t support your new hardware. You work in your native OS and at the same time you want to use your new hardware with compatible OS. In such cases desktop virtualization can be a very good solution.

Sun xVM VirtualBox is among the compelling desktop virtualization solutions because it is available as a no-cost download for personal use and as open source code.

Features:

Near-native performance. The software ships with optimizations (called “guest additions”) for certain guest operating systems. Guest additions are installed inside a specific VM to accelerate performance or otherwise enhance the feature set of a particular guest environment.

Rich host and guest integration. When a VM is configured in “seamless” mode, the software maps guest application windows directly on the host desktop, allowing guest and host windows to appear side-by-side. This gives the impression that a guest application window is running natively. Just as with native OS windows, the user can dynamically resize guest application windows as needed, or alternatively, run the guest VM in full-screen mode.

Shared folders and shared clipboard. Applications running on host and guest operating systems can transparently share files and clipboard data. When a folder is configured as a shared folder, it becomes available to the guest environment as a network share. Optionally, the clipboard of a guest OS can be shared with the host OS.

Time synchronization. Since the native OS manages the host system’s clock, some virtualized desktops do not adequately address time synchronization between host and guest OS environments. With VirtualBox, the guest operating environment is synchronized automatically with the native OS, allowing the user to see accurate time reporting.

Powerful virtualized networking. Up to four virtual Gigabit-based network interfaces are supported in each VM and are then accessible from other machines on the physical network. When a VM is configured, the user individually selects what kind of hardware is presented to the virtual machine. Virtual network interfaces also support remote booting via PXE protocol.

Robust virtualized hard disk controller support. VirtualBox implements virtualized instances of two of the most common hard disk controller types, IDE and SATA. Up to 32 SATA devices are supported in a guest OS, enabling access to a variety of device types, including devices with removable media.

Support for Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) reporting. This functionality allows an ACPI-aware guest OS to obtain host configuration specifics, which helps the guest configure virtual hardware capabilities. ACPI simplifies the task of cloning PC images from real machines or from third-party virtual machines into VirtualBox software. An ACPI-aware guest can also obtain host power status, such as a low battery condition on a laptop.

Virtualized display support. VirtualBox supports all VESA standard resolutions and color depths. VMs can also be configured to support screen resolutions many times that of a typical physical display. This allows VMs to be spread over a large number of physical screens on a host system.

Secure VM instances. Because VirtualBox prevents data leakage, VM instances are isolated and cannot impact applications running on the host OS or within other VMs. This allows companies to extend access to non-native applications while protecting core business functions.

Sceenshots:

Create New Virtual Machine

VirtualBox Application and Deployment:

A typical user in this case is a software developer who downloads VirtualBox (at no charge for personal use), installs it on a desktop, and creates several VMs to simulate test environments for potential deployments. On a virtualized platform, multiple VMs act as isolated sandboxes for testing, eliminating the need and cost associated with corresponding physical systems. For example, a Web 2.0 developer must test applications on multiple browsers including Safari, Internet Explorer, and Mozilla (commonly used in Mac OS, Microsoft Windows, and UNIX environments, respectively). A single laptop configured with multiple VMs and these operating systems becomes a powerful yet low-cost test and development environment.

You can Download VirtualBox latest version from Here.

Few days before RightScale, inc announced that they will provide full support to the popular linux distribution as it is now part of the RightScale’s Cloud Management platform. This is really a good news for all the Ubuntu users and Developers as they can now enjoy the freedom to easily create, manage and deploy Cloud applications with full control and portability on Cloud computing technologies such as Amazon EC2.

From now on Cloud computing will be an effective area of development for Ubuntu developers. “RightScale’s cloud management platform removes much of the complexity and risk from cloud computing, providing an easy way for Ubuntu developers to ‘test the waters’ of cloud computing or even deploy full production cloud applications for cost-effective, on-demand IT.” said Thorsten von Eicken, RightScale CTO and founder.

It is now very easy to deploy complex cloud applications which will enable organizations to start business critical applications in a short span of time or even within few hours without any risk of lock in.

The package includes cloud ready server templates for Ubuntu, that are prebuilt for normal server configurations, such as database clusters, grids, scalable web arrays and application arrays all executing on Ubuntu server.

“The RightScale cloud management platform gives Ubuntu developers an excellent cloud management solution, with automated management of the complete cloud deployment throughout the application’s lifecycle,” said Simon Wardley, support services manager at Canonical. “RightScale is a clear leader in the cloud space, and we look forward to working with them as we continue to embrace cloud computing as part of Ubuntu.”

What is RightScale:

For those who doesn’t know about RightScale , it is the worlds leading Cloud computing management organization founded in 2006.RightScale Cloud is delivered as “Software as a service ” (SAAS) and it is easily accessable as free developers edition and as enterprise edition as well.

So why not start developing and deploying Cloud computing applications using Ubuntu and be among the few developers of Cloud.

Here is the free Developers version.

Linux Mint is an Operating system which was developed in order to overcome the shortcomings of Ubuntu. Linux Mint is one of the most famous packages of last year. It will not be wrong to say that Linux Mint is much better than Ubuntu and there are number of reasons and facts for Ubuntu users to switch to Linux Mint.

Linux Mint is based on the Ubuntu 8.04, as Ubuntu 8.04 provides you with the long term support, APT package manager with the huge library

and most of all it has almost no hardware compatibility issues as compared to the other versions.

Why to switch to Linux Mint:

Obviously Linux Mint has got awesome graphics and user interface as compared to old Ubuntu. It has got simple boot-loader, cool desktop layout and a Mint menu which can be customized in number of ways. It comes with lot of improvements which makes common windows tasks much easier

Linux mint offer number of applications that are not available in Ubuntu. There are many pre-installed applications like multimedia codecs, drivers for Wi-fi cards etc. Moreover as Ubuntu and Linux Mint use the same software repositories, so any software that can be installed on Ubuntu is compatible with Linux Mint, hence it provides users access to a huge collection of packages and software.

It is a Debian-based distribution and as such it is very solid and it comes with one of the greatest package managers.

Ubuntu as compared to Linux Mint have got very larger support community but at the same time every advice and help is also applicable to Linux Mint.

Linux Mint comes up with Mint Tools. Mint Tools are collection of applications that makes computer management easy for all kind of users. Mint tools include MintInstall, MintUpdate, MintDesktop, MintConfig, MintAssistant, MintUpload, MintSpace, MintMenu, MintWifi, MintNanny and MintMake.

“It’s one of the most community driven distributions. You could literally post an idea in the forums today and see it implemented the week after in the “current” release. Of course this has pros and cons and compared to distributions with road maps, feature boards and fixed release cycles we miss a lot of structure and potentially a lot of quality, but it allows us to react quickly, implement more innovations and make the whole experience for us and for the users extremely exciting” –Linux Mint Team

Linux Mint consistently ranks highly on DistroWatch, which tracks the popularity of various Linux and BSD distributions based on the number of daily page hits which each distribution generates. As of January 2009, Linux Mint was ranked 3rd.

You can create live CDs and live USB drives from ISO of Linux Mint which is available for free download.

Acer have confirmed to launch the 10 inch Aspire One netbook in February. But the news has gained much attention after it was announced that the netbook will be released with a choice of Windows XP or Linux distribution called Linpus, and the option of a solid-state drive (SSD) or an HDD. However, buyers will not have these options in the initial release of the netbook, which will launch in mid-February and cost £299 ($425).

Initially it was announced that the 10 inch Aspire One would be Windows XP-only but a few days ago a spokesperson confirmed that the 10-inch Aspire One “will be available with XP or Linux, and HDD or SSD”. The netbook comes with 160 GB hard disk drive for storage whereas the SSD will have a capacity of 16 GB. Neither the launch date nor the price for the linux flavour of the machine have been confirmed yet. The original Aspire One that was 8.9 inch had two SD card slots but the new 10 inch version will not have a second SD card slot. In the earlier version, the second SD slot was there to hold a flash memory card that would be permanently housed in the netbook to supplement the 8GB or 16GB SSD. The new version lacks that second slot “due to the increase in standard storage sizes” according to an Acer spokesperson.

Some other features of the upcoming product include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and optional 3G connectivity, a built-in webcam, a choice of an Intel Atom processor, up to 2G of DDR RAM. Battery life of up to seven hours is an additional bonus.

LINUX is one of the world’s leading open-source Operating System. Linus Torvald was studying in University of Helsinki, as UNIX was very expensive at that time so he thought it would be a good idea to develop a free Operating System like UNIX for academics purpose. So LINUX kernel was created by Linus Torvald. Kernel is the heart of the operating system. HP, IBM and other giants in the field of computing have embraced LINUX and they all support its development.

Here are top 11 reasons to choose LINUX as your operating system.

LINUX is FREE:

Well if you are using Microsoft Windows on your PC then you must have paid one-fourth of your computer price to Microsoft for buying the license. On the other hand LINUX is completely free i-e not even a single cent. Well thousands of people around the world are working on its development and they all are doing this for free. Some companies are also making revenue by providing the documentation and by selling their own version of LINUX, but i think its a healthy activity after all.

No VIRUS Thing in LINUX:

Whenever the word VIRUS comes into your mind then the Windows is the most likely next one. Yes its true, if you study the history of viruses then Microsoft Windows is on the top of the list. Well i haven’t heard of any real virus in LINUX, obviously creating a virus for LINUX is not impossible but its quite difficult because:

As Microsoft Windows is mostly used by people, so the creators of viruses will try to do the maximum damage to people. So they target Windows mostly. Its not necessary that they attack Windows always but i am talking generally, as it happens most of the time

Secondly if you install any program on windows then that program have got the maximum access to all the files of operating system, thus making an easy path for a virus to corrupt your system files. On the other hand your LINUX have got Smart Authorization Management, which asks for a administrator password for every action you perform or a virus will perform. If you are not the admin then you don’t have authorization to install anything. Although bit annoying sometimes but still far better than getting rid of all of your important data.

3rd reason is that as LINUX is being developed by hundred thousands of people around the world because of its opens-source nature, so you there is less chance of security flaws in it as compared to Windows whose is not open source. In simple words, more will be the eyes on one project, less will the chance of error.

Free and Unlimited Support:

Well in short as LINUX is open-source so number of LINUX developers are available all around the Internet i-e on forums, mailing lists, IRC channels etc and they are happy to solve your problem free of charge as this would persuade as many people to switch to LINUX after all.

No Need to Install Again and Again:

Well i have heard many people complaining about the performance of their system like “My windows are getting sluggish day by day”, “I need to re-install windows as newly installed windows runs more faster” and many more. Well tell you the truth, if you will install LINUX now then you will feel the same fast performance of this OS even after five years. This is because in LINUX there are no trojans, viruses, ad-wares, bugs etc that will effect the performance of your system.

LINUX Introduced it First:

Well you have been impressed by 3D and transparency possibilities brought to you by Microsoft Vista, and many of you must also have bought new powerful systems for using Vista, infact its LINUX who provided you with the same capabilities number of years before the launch of Vista at very low system specifications.

No Disk De-Fragmentation Needed:

You must have gone through long process of disk defragmentation in your Windows O.S [Obviously if you know what is mean by disk defragmentation]. Its quite time consuming process. On the other hand LINUX don’t need disk defragmentation at all. As far as i know, windows file system places files in random clusters and on defragmentation it arranges the files to occupy contiguous storage locations. On the other hand LINUX have got completely different strategy, it looks for a paticular drawer of (approximately) similar in size to the size of the file to be placed on hard disk. Unlike windows file system it don’t need to break the file into small parts and hence dont need to arrange them later.

No Need to Install Separate Messaging Services:

Well if you have got different accounts on MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, Jabber, AIM, etc. then in windows you need to install special messenger for each of the messaging service. On the other hand LINUX provides you with the “Pidgin”, an instant messaging program from which you can access all the messaging services at once. Hence no need to download and install each messenger + no advertisements.

LINUX Dont Need Drivers:

Well whenever you install a new hardware, in windows you need a driver in order to make it functional. Usually every hardware comes up with a small driver CD and a lengthy manual of installation instructions. Sometimes if you lost that CD then you might have the only chance of getting the drivers from Internet. Its quite a tiring job to find a exact driver of your hardware.

On the other hand LINUX don’t need drivers at all because all the drivers are included in the kernel of LINUX, that comes up with every single LINUX installation which makes a very fast and standalone installation process.

Don’t Get Lost? Use Workspace:

In windows when you have got a word processor, web-browser, email client, instant messaging program and some other windows opened at the same time, its difficult for you to manage all the windows at the same time.

LINUX solves this problems by providing different work spaces to you at the same time. Imagine if you have four desktops all available at the same time, then you place your word processor on one, email client on second and instant messaging program on third, it will be hell easy for you to manage all the processes.

LINUX Is More Stable:

Well some of you have experienced loss of data due to improper shutdown of windows, also errors like “Blue Screen of death ” or “You system will shutdown within one minute without any reason specified” etc.

LINUX is far more stable than windows, its don’t need to be restarted for years until you do a major upgradation to system. This is the reason LINUX is installed on most of the Internet servers as they usually never need to restart. Most of the time, you won’t leave your computer on for such a long time, but this shows how stable Linux is.

No More Hardware Upgrade:

From Windows 95 to Windows Vista, whenever Microsoft released the new version of windows, this news is always followed by demand of more and more powerful specs of the system. On the other hand, you may install LINUX even on the system which refuses to install Windows XP due to hardware limitations.
